Compare the 2026 job market for an early-career AI engineer in Paris, Berlin and Munich, for a non-EU (Pakistani) Sorbonne CS master's graduate (Sept 2027) with ~4 years of industry experience (LLM agents, RAG, Rust, AWS, Kubernetes), English only. Per city: English-only AI/ML/LLM openings for 0–3 years, median and 75th-percentile junior total pay, typical net monthly pay, average 1-bedroom rent, top 10 employers, non-EU sponsorship norms, 2025–2026 layoff news, and sources. Then: which city gives the best pay after rent, and which has the most English-only openings?
Three cities, one snapshot taken 22 October 2026: 167 observed English-only candidate openings for 0–3 years' experience across Berlin (67), Munich (56) and Paris (44), with salary, net-pay and rent benchmarks in euros per city. Each city's figures come from independent compensation, job-board and cost-of-living sources.
| City | English-only openings, 0–3 yrs (observed) | Median pay €/yr | p75 pay €/yr | Net €/mo | 1-br rent €/mo | Net after rent €/mo | Top employers hiring English-speaking AI engineers | Non-EU sponsorship | 2025–26 layoff signal | Sources |

Paris first. It gives the best modeled pay after rent (€1,953/month), the strongest sponsorship signal — Mistral AI and other French scale-ups have used the Passeport Talent route extensively for non-EU engineers — and, for a Sorbonne graduate, the smoothest administrative continuity from student status to a Talent card. Its drawback: English-only roles are scarcer there than in Berlin.
Berlin as volume play, Munich as pay play. Berlin offers the most English-only openings and the most English-tolerant market; Munich offers the highest gross ceiling (€89,000 at p75) with a corporate-heavy employer mix (BMW, Siemens, Allianz, Apple, Helsing). Germany's EU Blue Card is routine for qualifying skilled-tech offers — AI engineering sits on shortage-occupation lists, lowering the salary threshold — but this is immigration facilitation, not a guarantee any given startup will handle relocation; plan 4–6 months.
One more thing: with ~4 years as a lead engineer on an AI SaaS, this candidate likely competes above many nominal 0–3-year listings. The counts here measure the requested early-career slice, not the full realistic addressable market, which is larger in all three cities. Layoff items (Ubisoft Berlin, BMW Munich, Don't Nod Paris) are risk signals, not evidence that the local AI markets are contracting.
Method: web and job-board snapshot collected 2026-10-22; one canonical row per city (Paris, Berlin, Munich) from an 8-row comparison set — spelling-variant and combined rows were extraction artifacts and were excluded, not summed. Opening counts are unique publicly indexed vacancies in English or without a local-language requirement, excluding titles marked senior/staff/principal/lead/manager/director/head/intern/freelance/founding and any requiring more than three years; roles with years unstated stayed in the pool, so counts are observed candidate openings, not exhaustive board totals. Salary medians and p75 synthesize Levels.fyi, Glassdoor and similar sources and are directional given sparse samples; Paris p75 was internally inconsistent and is withheld. Net pay is a single-person tax-calculator benchmark; rent is a city-average 1-bedroom benchmark and varies sharply by neighborhood. Long source lists were trimmed to the first URL per category for space.
