Best overall: Visual Studio Code — but five specialists beat it on their home turf

Six editors and IDEs compared on five 1‑to‑5 criteria, a synthesis score, and Stack Overflow 2025 survey usage. VS Code scores 4.8/5 and was used by 75.9% of survey respondents — versus 29.0% for Visual Studio and 27.1% for IntelliJ IDEA. Criterion ratings and synthesis scores are editorial synthesis from current evidence, not survey measurements.

Overall winner
Visual Studio Code 4.8 / 5 synthesis
Verdict
Best overall for most developers in 2026: broad language support, mature extensions, strong AI/agent support, cross‑platform reach, and a free core editor.
Qualification
No universal winner: choose IntelliJ IDEA for Java/Kotlin, Visual Studio for .NET/Windows, PyCharm for Python, Cursor for AI‑first work, or Zed for maximum speed.

What the scorecard cannot say alone

VS Code's survey usage of 75.9% is more than double the next tools — 29.0% for Visual Studio and 27.1% for IntelliJ IDEA; multiple selections were possible. survey.stackoverflow.co
Cursor matches VS Code's top AI-and-agents rating, pairing Grok and Composer models with always-on cloud agents and iOS remote control. cursor.com
Zed is the speed outlier — the only 5/5 on speed and lightness, where Visual Studio rates lowest at 2/5. zed.dev
Every one of the six has a free entry option; paid tiers cover professional tooling (JetBrains) or AI usage (Cursor, Zed, optional Copilot for VS Code). survey.stackoverflow.co

Method: comparison of 6 editors and IDEs, one row per product, with five 1‑to‑5 criterion ratings and a synthesis score out of 5 — both editorial synthesis from current product and survey evidence, not survey measurements. Research scanned 1,000+ live search results and current product and survey pages as of 2026‑08‑28. Usage percentages are the share of Stack Overflow 2025 Developer Survey respondents reporting use of each tool (multiple selections possible), not market share; absent percentages are left blank rather than treated as zero. Source-stated strengths and limitations were shortened for space in the table.
