The best search interfaces for AI agents
This report ranks developer-facing web search and retrieval APIs for AI agents on the Artificial Analysis Search Index (0–100, higher is better), covering 17 provider configurations across 8 providers, with official docs and pricing checked for 7 providers. Snapshot as of 2 September 2026.
Top of the index at 80 (medium). Structured JSON results with titles, URLs, snippets and dates; $5 per 1K requests. Sonar is the separate synthesized-answer API.
Four modes — turbo, fast, basic, advanced — scoring 67–75. Advanced ties for second on quality; fast and basic hold 73 at lower effort.
LLM-context mode scores 75. Independent real-time web index, privacy positioning, and specialized endpoints: local, images, AI summaries. A separate Answers plan gives summarized answers.
Neural search with six documented modes — instant, fast, auto, deep-lite, deep, deep-reasoning — plus Contents, async Agent research and Monitors.
Explicit latency/relevance modes: ultra-fast, fast, basic, advanced, with configurable snippets per URL. An ergonomic default for RAG and tool-calling agents.
Search returns highlights and can include full-page Markdown, HTML, links or screenshots in one call; web, news, images and category sources. 2 credits per 10 results.
Five interfaces span the pipeline: synchronous Search and Fetch for grounding and retrieval; asynchronous Research (cited reports), Tasks (batch) and Extract (repeated records).
Highlights mode scores 74 with the lowest end-to-end latency band among the 74+ group; snippets mode scores 68. No official pricing appeared in the scanned rows.
Answer APIs (Sonar, Brave Answers) return prose with citations; async agents (Exa Agent, Linkup Research, Sonar Deep Research) return reports. Different interface class from raw search.

Method: benchmark scores are the Artificial Analysis Search Index (Search API Public Leaderboard, fetched 2026-09-02; launch article 2026-08-18 supplies configurations no longer on the public page, shown hatched). 80 benchmark rows were deduplicated to one row per configuration, preferring the leaderboard over third-party restatements; 28 official documentation/pricing rows cover 7 providers. Scores are 0–100 agentic search quality with a fixed agent; they do not measure cost, latency or extraction quality. Prices and scores are snapshots as of 2 September 2026 and may change. Blank matrix cells mean the scanned pages did not state it — not that the feature is absent.
