How do birds migrate in different parts of the world? List most famous species and their routes, draw them on a map
Nine iconic migratory species, each described by a breeding origin and a nonbreeding destination with representative anchor coordinates, drawn from published tracking studies and conservation sources (research assembled 2026-09-01). Routes span from a Dutch Arctic tern's ~90,000 km annual loop through three oceans to a bar-headed goose's 1,300–1,500 km hop over the Himalaya.
Arcs are schematic great-circle connectors between regional anchor points, not surveyed GPS tracks; the actual corridor is described in each tooltip and in the table. Ocean shading is depth-neutral. Drifting dots show direction of autumn travel. Two species lack a usable origin coordinate and appear in the table only.
Departure is driven by seasonal swings in food and daylight; navigation combines an inherited compass direction with cues from the sun, stars, landmarks, smell and the geomagnetic field. The shape of a route then follows energetics: soaring birds like storks trace land where thermals rise; shorebirds and songbirds load fat and hop between critical refuelling sites; seabirds ride ocean wind systems in vast loops; and high-altitude migrants like the bar-headed goose rely on exceptional oxygen physiology to take the mountain shortcut. These general mechanisms frame — but are separate from — the sourced species routes below.

Coordinates are representative anchors for broad regions (e.g. "South America" is one continental point), not GPS tracks; the bar-tailed godwit's north-eastern Siberia origin and the blackpoll warbler's boreal-forest origin lack usable coordinates, so those routes are listed but not drawn.
