What matters beyond width
Install independence is the pass/fail test. Each seat must stay tight when the neighboring seats are removed; touching or puzzling shapes cannot be what holds an installation secure.
Boosters create a different bottleneck. Even a narrow booster fails in practice if the child cannot reach and operate the vehicle buckle beside another seat.
Front-to-back space matters in sedans. The Britax Poplar is specifically noted as compact rear-facing; the BabyTrend Trooper was excluded from the final nine partly because it is not especially compact front-to-back.
