Nearest Zoo Voronoi Atlas — United States

382 listed zoos carve America into wildly unequal nearest‑zoo territories

Every Wikidata entity classed as a zoo or a subclass — aquariums, safari parks, reptile houses, insectariums — located in the United States with coordinates, extracted live on 2026-08-28: 382 geocoded locations across 48 states. Each colored cell below is the region whose nearest listed zoo, in straight-line map distance, is the point inside it. Vermont and Wyoming carry no qualifying entity in this source and are marked as no-data states.

Step through states, then read the national mosaic

Straight-line geographic proximity only — not road travel time. In the nationwide view cells legitimately cross state lines. Alaska and Hawaiʻi sit in projection insets, so their cells are clipped to their own outlines.

cell shade = size of the nearest-zoo territory · pale = dense coverage, deep green = the nearest listed zoo is far one dot per listed zoo

What the mosaic can’t say alone

California holds 41 of the 382 listed locations, Florida 34, Texas 25 and New York 17 — their coastal metros shatter into tiny nearest-zoo territories, while single cells in Nevada, Montana and the Dakotas sprawl across whole regions. wikidata.org
Vermont and Wyoming appear in no row of this extraction: 48 of 50 states are covered, and residents of both states fall inside territories generated by neighboring states’ zoos. wikidata.org
The atlas stretches from Panaʻewa Rainforest Zoo in Hilo at latitude 19.66 wikidata.org to the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage at 61.12 wikidata.org.
Four states are one-zoo states in this source — Delaware (Brandywine Zoo), Iowa (Blank Park Zoo), Maine (York’s Wild Kingdom) and New Hampshire (Squam Lakes Natural Science Center) — so a single facility’s territory swallows the whole state and beyond. wikidata.org

Method: live Wikidata SPARQL extraction, 2026-08-28 — entities typed as zoo or a subclass (including aquariums, safari parks, reptile facilities and insectariums), located in the United States and carrying coordinates. 382 location rows across 48 states; state counts and the national totals come from precomputed aggregates in the same extraction. Each Voronoi cell is the region whose nearest listed zoo, measured as straight-line distance in the projected map plane (Albers USA, with Alaska and Hawaiʻi insets), is the cell’s generating point; boundaries therefore shift slightly with projection choice, and inset geometry makes Alaska and Hawaiʻi cells approximate. This is a source-bounded directory: Wikidata coverage is incomplete, some entities are historic or duplicated at slightly different coordinates, and no cell implies a legal service territory or an actual drive-time catchment. The topology file also carries Puerto Rico and the territories, but no data row falls there.
