Llama remains research’s dominant open model, while Qwen has become its closest challenger
We counted title-or-abstract mentions across 277,735 arXiv submissions in cs.AI, cs.CL, cs.LG and stat.ML from 1 December 2022 through 24 August 2026. Llama led the full period with 5,649 mentions; Qwen’s quarterly fraction rose from effectively zero to 1.30% in partial Q3 2026, versus Llama’s 1.92%.

What changed

Llama established the benchmark position early. Its share jumped from 0.07% in 2023 Q1 to 0.80% in Q2, then peaked at 2.66% in 2024 Q4 and remained the largest line in every complete quarter afterward.

Qwen is the clearest sustained challenger. It rose from 0.10% in 2024 Q1 to 1.52% in 2026 Q2; its partial-Q3 share of 1.30% is above DeepSeek, Gemma and Mistral/Mixtral.

DeepSeek produced the sharpest event-driven surge. Its fraction moved from 0.21% in 2024 Q4 to 1.41% in 2025 Q1, peaked at 1.89% in Q2, and then settled near 1.1% in early 2026.

The older cohort faded as the field diversified. BLOOM, Falcon and GPT-Neo/J/NeoX each finished below 0.1% in partial 2026 Q3, while Gemma reached 0.88% and OLMo 0.18%.
