Rename pops of 129–582% in a day, but the gains mostly melt: the “Blockchain” and “AI” rename effect
Asked:
“Every company that added 'blockchain' or 'AI' to its name — what the stock did after”
There is no authoritative global registry of listed-company renames, so this is the broadest verifiable census a web scan through 31 August 2026 could assemble: three clean company-level blockchain rename reactions from 2017, academic samples of 10–82 crypto renames (2008–2019), and an AI wave of roughly 27–33 US-listed rebrands since 2023. Figures are percentage stock or market-cap changes over the window each source reported — the windows differ and are not standardized event-study returns.

What the visual cannot say alone
A 2019 Finance Research Letters study found 10 firms adding “blockchain” or “bitcoin” to their names in 2014–2018, with statistically significant abnormal positive returns lasting two months after the change —

A larger 39-firm international sample earned +27% abnormal return the first day and about 30% over three days; a 40-firm study found the gains largely given back by around day +29, and an 82-company, 13-country sample showed a 32.06% next-day premium fading to 3.49% after 30 days —

In the AI wave, the FT counted at least 27 US-listed rebrands since 2023 whose combined market cap peaked $8.7bn (+106%) above the week before announcement — but more than half of that aggregate gain later disappeared and seven companies fell below pre-change levels —

Acadian found 33 AI-themed name changes on major US exchanges since 2023 (4 in 2023, 7 in 2024, 17 in 2025, 5 through April 2026) and stressed that most of its sampled renames did
not show eye-popping gains —

Utah research on companies touting AI changes (a broader group than literal renames) found average market-relative performance peaking above +53% around day 76 after announcement —

The rows behind the numbers
| Old name | New name | Wave | Reported change | Window | Source |

Method and limits
- Web scan conducted through 2026-08-31. Not exhaustive: no global registry of listed-company renames exists, and studies use different definitions.
- The AI census covers major US exchanges only; blockchain examples span worldwide and OTC markets.
- Announcement-day, premarket, peak-market-cap, 48-hour and multi-month figures are not directly comparable; none are standardized event-study returns.
- Rebrands often coincided with financings or strategic pivots, so this is association, not proof that the word caused the return.
- Stock splits, delistings, ticker changes and thin microcap trading complicate long-horizon comparisons.
- Company-level return cells were left unresolved where no source exposed a reliable figure.
Data: web scan of press, asset-manager and academic sources through 2026-08-31 — 3 clean blockchain rename reactions, 51 blockchain study/press findings, 24 AI research/news findings, 11 sampled Acadian rename pairs, 5 FT-extracted examples. Numbers are stock-price or market-cap percentage changes over each source's own window. Duplicate mirrors of the Acadian table and sparse FT rows without figures were cut for space.
