The strongest three-across candidates are 16.0–17.0 inches wide
From more than 1,000 search results, six current or recently documented narrow seats stood out for a mid-size sedan. The best general-purpose starting points are the 16.7-inch Chicco Fit3x ClearTex and Graco SlimFit3 LX; the actual winner depends on your children, seating positions and the sedan’s belt geometry.

What matters in a sedan
01
Width alone does not prove fit. Armrests, belt anchors, contours and adjacent-seat “puzzling” determine whether three independently tight installs work.
02
For convertibles, start at 16.7–17.0 inches. Chicco, Graco, Evenflo and Britax all have candidates in this narrow band; Britax’s ClickTight panel may simplify a tight belt installation. britax.com
03
Match the seat to the child’s stage. The 16-inch Safety 1st Grand is forward-facing only, while the Liing is infant-only; neither substitutes for a rear-facing convertible when that is what the child needs. safety1st.com
04
Use seat belts when lower-anchor spacing works against you. Three-across often requires seat-belt installations because lower anchors may center a seat in a way that wastes lateral room; always follow both manuals.
Before buying: test the exact three seats in the exact sedan, including front-seat clearance. Each seat should move less than 1 inch at its belt path after adjacent seats are removed and reinstalled. Confirm setup with a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician; never choose a narrower seat that is inappropriate for a child’s age, size or developmental stage.
Method: searched 1,027 deduplicated web results across manufacturer, specialist and review sources on 25 August 2026; shortlisted six models with documented external widths and explicit narrow/three-across positioning. Width is maximum published external seat width, not guaranteed usable seating-position width.
