2,126 independent coffee roasters, listed state by state across all of the source's U.S. pages

Asked:

“show me a map of all specialty coffee roaster across the USA. show me their founding date and other important attributes as well in a table. do state-by-state queries and then aggregate.”

Every state directory page on Roast Local was queried separately and the listings aggregated: 2,126 normalized roaster-state records, scanned 2026-08-31. Washington leads with 165 listings, Oregon follows with 140 and Colorado with 118. Founding dates were discoverable for only 65 records, ownership statements for 32 and certifications for 6 — sparse fields reflect what the scanned pages state, not absence in reality. The source claims 4,800+ roasters across the US and Canada on its homepage; this state-page extraction yielded 2,126 US records.

Where America's independent roasters are listed

Colour = listings per state directory. Hover a state for its count, top cities and sample roasters. Source pages expose no coordinates, so the map works at state precision.

Every state, sorted

Listings per state directory page; one distinct value per state, never summed across rows
Washington alone holds 165 listings — nearly 8% of the national table — and the Pacific Northwest pair of Washington and Oregon together account for 305, more than one in seven.
California shows only 5 listings — fewer than Wyoming — a striking gap in the source's coverage rather than a real scarcity of roasters; see the California page.
Delaware, Texas and Washington, DC returned no listings in this scan, so 48 of the 51 queried directories contributed rows; compare the totals against the 4,800+ claim on roastlocal.com.
The oldest discoverable founding date is 1918, and dates cluster after 2010; among the 32 ownership statements, veteran-owned and family-owned identities dominate, largely sourced from the site's veteran-owned roasters feature.

Data completeness

What is filled in and what is blank. Of 2,126 records: 65 carry a founding date or year, 32 an ownership attribute, 6 a certification, 59 a specialty note. These fields come from supplemental pages (blog features, city guides) linked in the Sources column; a blank cell means no statement was discoverable in the scanned pages, not that the roaster lacks the attribute. Positions are city/state text only — the directory publishes no street coordinates, so no address or date was invented.

Method: each of the 51 Roast Local state directories (50 states + Washington, DC) was queried separately on 2026-08-31 and the listings normalized into 2,126 unique roaster-state records; 48 directories returned rows (Delaware, Texas and DC returned none). A record is one roaster listed on one state page; counts per state are the source's distinct listing counts. Founding dates (65), ownership (32) and certifications (6) come from supplemental Roast Local pages and one external article, cited per row. Map precision is city/state; the source exposes no coordinates. The source homepage claims 4,800+ roasters across the US and Canada — a broader universe than this state-page extraction. Long specialty notes are truncated in the table for space.
