Britain out-builds every other nation: 569 documented car makers, from Rolls-Royce to one-off kit shops

A live-web census of 4,436 deduplicated country–brand records — active giants, defunct marques and specialist builders — across 196 countries, retrieved 2026-08-28. Counts are documented lower bounds, not an official registry.

Documented car brands and complete-car builders per country, log-stepped bins. Scroll or pinch to zoom, drag to pan, hover a country for its status breakdown and a sample of maker names. Grey means no qualifying maker was documented in this scan — not proof that none ever existed.

What the map cannot say alone

The UK's 569 makers split into 108 active, 105 defunct and 356 whose status the sources leave unclear — the deepest documented roster of any country. iiab.live
The US logs 498 makers but status was resolved for only one of them; nearly its entire historic marque record sits in the unclear column. kiwix.enszfarms.org
China's 282 makers include 169 marked active — more currently-active builders than any other country in the census. iiab.live
Tunisia is the only documented country whose entire roster — 7 of 7 makers — is listed as active, with no defunct or unclear entries. owiki.org
Read every zero as "nothing documented in this scan". Obscure one-off builders are inherently hard to enumerate, country attribution can be disputed, and the active/defunct subtotals are not exhaustive — status was often unclear in the sources. These figures are documented lower bounds, not a claim of perfect historical completeness.

Method: live-web census run 2026-08-28, country-targeted searches plus broad international marque directories; 196 country rows, one per country, deduplicated within each country by normalized spelling and punctuation. A qualifying entity had to build a complete automobile; motorcycle-only firms, suppliers, importers, dealers, model names and tuners that never built a complete car were excluded, and distinct marques under one corporate group were kept separate. "Makers" counts unique documented brand or builder names per country; status subtotals are non-exhaustive because status was often unclear. Microstates absent from the 1:110m map geometry (Monaco, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Malta and similar) appear in the table but not on the map. Zero-count countries are omitted from the table for space and shown grey on the map.
